Why the first hire sets the ceiling

The challenge

It started with an invitation, not a pitch — would the Head of Procurement join a leadership forum? At the time her function was at a crossroads. The business was scaling, and what had been transactional purchasing needed to become a strategic lever. She needed leaders who could manage suppliers and influence cross-functional decisions, bring analytical rigour, and raise the team’s ceiling.

The approach

Our first placement — a Procurement Manager — set the precedent for what the team could be. We partnered again in 2022 on two Sourcing Specialists, then the relationship widened. Drawing on a finance background, we began supporting the company’s Finance organization: a Senior Manager, FP&A in 2023, then Senior Financial Analysts across Marketing, Supply Chain, and Corporate as the partnership deepened through 2024 and 2025.

Each hire was made to do more than fill a seat — to strengthen culture, lift performance, and build a pipeline of future leaders. The results bear that out: through 2025, every candidate we placed had stayed with the company, two procurement hires have been promoted internally, and three were selected for the company’s inaugural Emerging Leader Program — out of just eight participants company-wide.

What began as one connection became a five-year partnership across two functions. Talent isn’t a line on an org chart. The right first hire sets the ceiling for everything that follows.
